Itinerary Details
Day 1 (26th March, 2021): Arrival in Colombo
Upon your arrival at the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Rahhalah Representative, and transferred to your hotel (check-in time after 12.30 p.m.)
Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure, exploring the city at your own pace.
Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, has a long history as a port on ancient east-west trade routes, ruled successively by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British. This diverse heritage is reflected in its architecture: a mix of colonial buildings, high-rises, and shopping malls.
Accommodation: 3-star (basic) hotel in Colombo.
Day 2 (27th March 2021): Colombo – Kithulgala (B, L, D)
After breakfast at the hotel, you will head towards Kithulgala (approx. a 3-hour drive).
Kitulgala, in the west of Sri Lanka, is one of the wettest places of the country. Situated in the Wet Zone rainforest, it is considered an important spot in terms of biodiversity. In 1956, the location was used for the filming of the Academy Award-winning movie: ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’. Now, nothing remains but the concrete foundations of the bridge which can still be seen. In more recent times, Kitulgala has become famous as an adventurers’ paradise and a hub for water-based adventure activities such as white water rafting and canyoning. Its surrounding forest patches have also made it an excellent destination for all nature enthusiasts.
White Water Rafting in Kelani River: This thrilling adventure on the white-water sections of the Kelani River is suitable for paddlers of all abilities. During this ‘character-building’ river-run, you will experience the adrenaline-pumping thrill of Grade 3-4 rapids and the euphoria of rising to the challenge and conquering an unrelenting river. The adventure lasts approx. 2 hrs and is suitable for kids at least 10 yrs old.
Canyoning (scrambling, swimming, floating, jumping, etc.)
After these two adventures, you will head to your hotel, to enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace.
Dinner and Overnight stay at a hotel in Kitulgala (basic amenities).
Day 3 (28th March 2021): Kithulgala – Udawalawe (B, L, D)
Early in the morning, you will embark on a Nature walk in the Mankandawa rain forest (approx. 2 hours).
After a late breakfast, you will head towards Udawalawe (an approx. 4-hour drive), where you will check-in in the Big Game Safari Camps.
After lunch, you will enjoy a 4WD safari through the Udawalawe National Park. Your driver/tracker will show you the Wild elephants, the giants, jungle cats, fishing cats, gray hangers, toque macaque, foxes, bandicoots, mongooses, jackals, wild boar, and water buffaloes during your 3-4-hour Safari.
The Udawalawe National Park is located on the borders of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces of Sri Lanka. Initially, it was created to provide a sanctuary for the wild animals exiled due to the construction of the Udawalawe reservoir (which is now considered as the main attraction for the elephants at the Udawalawe National Park). Udawalawe is an important habitat for Sri Lankan elephants, which are, otherwise, relatively hard to see in their open habitats.
Return to the campsite and BBQ dinner.
Overnight stay at the campsite.
Day 4 (29th March 2021): Udawalawe – Ahangama (B, L, D)
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Ahangama (approx. a 3-hour drive).
Check-in in the hotel and lunch by the afternoon.
Later, you will go for a catamaran ride in Koggala Lake, during which you will learn some of the local fishing methods, and you will explore the islands.
Koggala Lake near Koggala Galle district is a freshwater lagoon which sits 9.8 feet (3 meters) above the sea level, near the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is dotted with rocky islands, which you visit during your catamaran ride, and fringed with mangroves. The lagoon is alive with birdlife and supplies an abundance of prawns.
Late in the afternoon, you will return to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace.
Dinner and Overnight stay at a hotel in Ahangama (basic amenities).
